The challenge

A missed interpreter is a delayed claim

When an injured worker does not speak English, every step of the claim depends on an interpreter: the first clinic visit, the physical therapy schedule, the QME or AME evaluation, the deposition, and the hearing. A no-show or an unqualified interpreter means a rescheduled appointment, extended disability, and higher costs.

Adjusters, nurse case managers, and attorneys also need interpreters who understand the vocabulary of the system, from body-part diagrams and work restrictions to apportionment and permanent disability, and who know how to bill correctly under the fee schedule.

  • Medical treatment, physical therapy, and nurse case management visits
  • QME, AME, and independent medical examinations
  • Recorded statements, depositions, and WCAB hearings
  • Claim notices, benefit letters, and medical records in other languages
  • Volume scheduling across many claimants, clinics, and counties

How we help

A workers' compensation interpreting partner

Focus Interpreting specializes in medical and legal state-certified interpreters and has extensive experience in the workers' compensation industry. Our interpreters are HIPAA-trained, U.S.-based, and arrive 15 minutes early so appointments start on time. We cover Los Angeles, Orange County, San Bernardino, Riverside, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, and clients nationwide.

For treatment visits, med-legal exams, depositions, and hearings we send on-site interpreters. For check-in calls, utilization review conversations, and quick adjuster contact we provide phone interpreting 24/7, and Focus VRI delivers video interpreting on any smartphone or tablet when a visual connection helps.

Our translators handle claim correspondence, benefit notices, medical records, and foreign-language reports, and our legal transcriptionists produce transcripts of recorded statements and depositions.

"Focus Interpreting provides highly talented interpreters with a vast experience in language interpretation ... sound knowledge of medical subjects that are to be interpreted." — Donna O., RN, CCM at GENEX

Interpreter certification and billing in California workers' comp

California's workers' compensation system gives injured workers the right to an interpreter at medical treatment, medical-legal evaluations, depositions, and Workers' Compensation Appeals Board proceedings when they do not proficiently speak or understand English. Interpreters used in these settings are expected to be certified, or provisionally certified where a certified interpreter is not available, under the Labor Code and Division of Workers' Compensation regulations.

Interpreter services are reimbursed under the official interpreter fee schedule, which requires proper documentation of the assignment, the interpreter's certification, and the party who requested the service. Our invoices are prepared to those requirements to reduce billing questions and delays.

Medical information exchanged during a claim is protected health information. Our interpreters are HIPAA-trained, and every linguist works as an impartial third party under a code of ethics that requires confidentiality and accuracy.

  • Certified and provisionally certified interpreters matched to the setting
  • Fee-schedule-compliant invoices with certification details
  • HIPAA-trained, impartial interpreters for medical and legal encounters
  • Confirmation and no-show documentation for the claim file
