Why researchers outsource transcription

Why researchers outsource transcription

In the academic community, accurate and reliable transcription is critical to publishing credible research. Yet transcribing is long and tiresome work, and every hour a researcher spends replaying audio is an hour not spent analyzing it. There is also the constant risk of error when a tired ear fills in a word that was never said.

You do not have to carry that burden. Focus Interpreting provides transcription, interpreting, and translation in over 120 languages, and our trained transcribers deliver results faster than an individual researcher or small team can manage on their own.

We support graduate students, Ph.D. candidates, faculty, and institutional research teams, as well as businesses and public agencies that rely on qualitative data. Whatever the scale of your study, you receive quality transcripts at competitive rates and with confidence in the result.

What we transcribe for academic clients

What we transcribe for academic clients

Our language experts review the context of every transcription project before they begin, so that not a single detail is lost in the process. We routinely transcribe:

  • One-on-one research interviews and oral histories
  • Focus group discussions with multiple speakers and crosstalk
  • Surveys and structured questionnaires administered by phone or video
  • Lectures, seminars, symposia, and guest speaker recordings
  • Thesis and dissertation defenses, committee meetings, and lab meetings
  • Field recordings and ethnographic audio in any of 120+ languages

Transcript styles and conventions for research

Transcript styles and conventions for research

Qualitative methods differ in what they require of a transcript. Conversation analysis and discourse studies usually call for full verbatim transcripts with fillers, pauses, and overlapping speech marked. Thematic analysis and grounded theory typically work better with clean verbatim, where the meaning is preserved but the reading is easier.

Tell us which style you need and whether you want speaker identification, timestamps at set intervals, line numbering, or a template formatted for NVivo, ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA, or Dedoose. We will follow your protocol and apply it consistently across every file in the study.

For multilingual studies, we can deliver the transcript in the language spoken, an English translation, or a side-by-side bilingual document, so your analysis and your appendices are both covered.

File handling, ethics, and confidentiality

File handling, ethics, and confidentiality

We accept MP3, WAV, M4A, MP4, MOV, and most other audio and video formats, sent by email, Dropbox, or another secure link, or on CD or USB. If your recordings live on a university platform, share a download link and we will take it from there.

Research participants trust you with their words, and you can trust us with the same. Files are accessed only by the transcribers assigned to your project, all of whom work under non-disclosure agreements. On request, we remove names and identifying details and use the pseudonyms your IRB protocol specifies.

Focus Interpreting works online with researchers across California and nationwide. Contact us for a complete list of services and rates.
