Adobe InDesign formatting for translated documents

Adobe InDesign is the industry standard for books, brochures, posters, magazines, and reports. Our graphic designers and production artists keep those publications intact after translation, in any of the 120+ languages we cover.

Why Focus

InDesign Formatting, done right

Translated layouts that look like the original

  • Native InDesign workflow

We work inside your .indd and IDML files, preserving styles, master pages, and links, and return packaged files ready for print or export.

  • Text expansion managed

Translations often run 20 to 30 percent longer than English. We adjust type, spacing, and layout so nothing is cut off or crowded.

  • CJK, Arabic, and RTL ready

Correct fonts, line breaking, and mirrored layouts for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, Farsi, and other complex scripts.

  • Linguist-checked proofs

A native-speaking linguist reviews the final layout, so hyphenation, line breaks, and punctuation are correct, not just the translation.

  • Print and digital output

Press-ready PDFs with bleeds and marks, interactive PDFs, and accessible exports from the same source file.

Fast, efficient InDesign services

Fast, efficient InDesign services

Adobe InDesign is the professional desktop publishing application organizations rely on to create books, posters, brochures, flyers, newspapers, magazines, and annual reports. When one of those pieces is translated, the words change but the design should not. That is where our team comes in.

Focus Interpreting has a team of talented graphic designers and production artists with broad experience keeping publications intact through translation. We take your original InDesign package, place the translated text, and rebuild each page so it reads naturally in the new language while matching the look of the source.

Because our linguists and designers work together, terminology decisions and layout decisions are made at the same time. You get one point of contact, one timeline, and a finished file you can send straight to the printer.

What multilingual typesetting involves

What multilingual typesetting involves

Typesetting a translation is more than pasting text into a frame. Every language has its own rules for line breaking, hyphenation, punctuation, capitalization, and spacing, and a layout that looks polished in English can look wrong to a native reader if those rules are ignored.

Our production artists are trained on the conventions of the languages they set. They know that German compound words need generous columns, that Spanish and French questions carry opening punctuation, that Thai and Lao have no spaces between words, and that Japanese text should never break in the middle of certain character pairs.

  • Text expansion and contraction: reflowing pages when the translation is longer or shorter than the source
  • Font selection: choosing typefaces with full glyph coverage for accented Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Devanagari, Thai, and CJK scripts
  • Right-to-left layouts: mirroring page structure, navigation, and tables for Arabic, Hebrew, Farsi, and Urdu using InDesign's Middle Eastern features
  • Vertical and mixed-direction text where required for Japanese and Traditional Chinese publications
  • Language-specific hyphenation, quotation marks, number formats, and date formats
  • Consistent paragraph and character styles so future updates are quick and inexpensive

How we handle your files

How we handle your files

Send us a packaged InDesign folder with fonts and links, or an IDML file if you prefer. We extract the text for translation, keeping every style and tag mapped, so the translated content drops back into the correct frame with the correct formatting. Images, logos, and charts with embedded text are updated as well.

When you are publishing in several languages at once, we build from a single master so that all versions share the same page count, structure, and imagery wherever possible. That makes review easier for you and keeps reprint costs down.

Delivery includes the updated InDesign package, a press-ready PDF, and any additional exports you need, such as interactive PDFs, EPUB, or an accessible PDF prepared by our ADA remediation team.

With accurate translations in over 120 languages and layouts checked by native speakers, there are no language or cultural barriers to a finished, professional publication.

Quality control before anything goes to print

Quality control before anything goes to print

Every formatted document goes through a two-stage review. First, the production artist checks the layout against the source for missing text, overset frames, broken links, and style inconsistencies. Then a native-speaking linguist proofreads the laid-out pages for line breaks, hyphenation, and any text that was truncated or reordered during layout.

You receive a proof PDF for approval before final files are released. You can request corrections at this stage before final files are produced, and on request we can keep your project files so later editions, additional languages, or reprints start from the approved version.
