The challenge

Every word can decide a case

In a deposition or hearing, an interpreter is not a convenience; they are part of the record. A softened answer, a skipped qualifier, or an unfamiliar legal term can weaken testimony, invite objections, or trigger a continuance.

Legal teams also face scheduling pressure, tight confidentiality obligations, and clients who are anxious and unfamiliar with the process. You need interpreters who are certified, impartial, punctual, and comfortable working under oath.

  • Depositions and examinations under oath with strict verbatim standards
  • Attorney-client meetings where privilege must be preserved
  • Hearings, arbitrations, and mediations with rapid exchanges
  • Immigration, family, and workers' compensation matters involving vulnerable parties
  • Foreign-language evidence that must be translated and certified for filing

Legal interpreting for every stage of a matter

How we help

Legal interpreting for every stage of a matter

Focus Interpreting specializes in medical and legal state-certified interpreters. Our legal interpreters are trained in both consecutive and simultaneous modes, so they can handle a witness examination one hour and whisper-interpret a proceeding for your client the next. They arrive 15 minutes early and remain professional, impartial third parties throughout.

We staff depositions, court hearings, trials, arbitrations, mediations, independent medical examinations, recorded statements, and attorney-client consultations on-site. When travel is impractical, video remote interpreting and phone interpreting give you a qualified interpreter within minutes.

Our certified translators handle contracts, pleadings, discovery, evidence, and personal records, and our legal transcriptionists produce accurate transcripts of recorded interviews, hearings, and audio evidence.

Standards

Certification, ethics, and language access in the courts

California requires interpreters in court proceedings to be certified or registered through the Judicial Council, and federal courts maintain their own certification for the most requested languages. Courts that receive federal funding also have Title VI obligations to provide language access to litigants with limited English proficiency.

Beyond credentials, legal interpreters follow a code of ethics that requires accuracy and completeness, impartiality, confidentiality, and disclosure of any conflict of interest. Our interpreters work to those standards on every assignment, and we adhere to the ATA Code of Ethics for translation.

For document translation, we provide a signed certificate of accuracy with each certified translation so it can be submitted to courts, USCIS, and other authorities, and we can arrange notarization when required.

  • State-certified interpreters matched to the language and proceeding
  • Interpreter oath, impartiality, and conflict-of-interest disclosure
  • Certified translations with a certificate of accuracy
  • Confidentiality agreements and secure handling of privileged material

Certified translation and legal transcription

Legal translation is about more than fluency. Our translators understand the difference between a term of art and its everyday meaning, and they preserve the structure of the source so counsel can compare versions line by line. We translate contracts, court filings, discovery, evidence, immigration records, and corporate documents.

Legal transcription turns recorded depositions, interviews, hearings, body-camera footage, and voicemail evidence into clean, time-stamped transcripts. Foreign-language recordings can be transcribed in the source language and translated with a certified English transcript for the record.
